US to expand support for Nigeria’s post-amnesty programme in Niger delta

APA, Abuja (Nigeria) The United States government will expand its support for the Nigeria Federal Government’s post-amnesty programme in the Niger Delta, the US ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Robin Rene Sanders, said in Abuja on Sunday.

Sanders made the pledge while answering questions at a forum with journalists and explained : “We hope that in bilateral discussions, we can find ways to further expand, not only on what we have been doing, but also be supportive of the new efforts — post-amnesty efforts that are going to be made.”

The ambassador said that issues of security in the Niger Delta centred on recognising the legitimate concerns of the people in the region.

“It’s about development ; rehabilitation ; re-integration, and when you have all of that, you can also have good security,” she noted.

On Nigeria’s quest for nuclear technology, Sanders said that talks were currently going on between the two countries’ delegations in New York on the issue.

According to her, the talks are focusing on the kind of support, capacity building and training Nigeria required for effective application of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
