Malawians in fear of new xenophobic attacks in South Africa

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) Foreigners including Malawians in South Africa are said to live in fear due to xenophobic attack threats, Malawi Secretary for Foreign Affairs Paul Chiunguzeni said in Lilongwe.

Malawi Secretary for Foreign Affairs Paul Chiunguzeni said his office has received unofficial reports that some Malawians are living in fear of the attacks on foreigners by South Africans after the 2010 World Cup.

"We have communicated with our office in South Africa to send us a report if there were indeed xenophobic threats so that we can properly plan for travel and accommodation arrangements for the victims before it occurs," he said.

Chiunguzeni added that government was also linking up with their South African counterpart on the prevention of outbreaks of the violence on foreigners.

Currently, unofficial reports indicate that some Zimbabweans have already fled South Africa to their country in fear of the attacks.

In 2008, over 60 foreigners including Malawians were killed, several hundred injured, and many thousands of immigrants were displaced and returned to their home countries following xenophobic attacks.
