South African leader tells party members to fight xenophobia

APA – Cape Town (South Africa) Delivering his political report at the start of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee meeting in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg on Saturday, South African president Jacob Zuma called on all ANC members to fight xenophobic tendencies in areas where they live.

Rumours of attacks against foreigners in the country spread like wild fire last week and authorities are fingering criminal elements for this.

Speaking to journalists, ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said "it’s unimaginable that a few days after the World Cup there would be some people who are turning against their brothers and sisters."

Issues of service delivery also topped the agenda of the ANC executive committee meeting with discussion focusing on how to translate the World Cup experience into a living for South Africans, Mthembu added.

He said the President Zuma called for the World Cup experience to be used to do “things better, smarter but also to be the pride that South Africa has been over this World Cup in terms of service delivery."

On the strife the party is experiencing within its youth league, the ANC said this is an internal matter and would be treated as such.

On Sunday, the ANC executive committee meeting will focus on the discussion documents prepared for the National General Council in September.
