Niger, development partners review poverty reduction strategy paper

APA-Niamey (Niger) The Nigerien government and its development partners on Tuesday started the annual review of the National Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) in a bid to assess the progress so far made in the initiatives for an accelerated strategy to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

This three-day meeting will enable “to assess the progress and the difficulties in the achievement of goals related to the implementation of the Accelerated Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy as well as the Millennium Development Goals”, Prime minister Mahamadou Danda explained.

The Nigerien poverty reduction paper, he said, has been deprived of the international community’s various supports, amidst a food and nutritional crisis and the recent floods which left some 200,000 homeless, according to the United Nations.

European Union Resident representative in Niger, Hans Peter Schadek, said however despite the rather busy political schedule, the commitments to monitoring the national poverty reduction paper have been respected.

The EU official further reckoned that the strategy should be a “real framework” of national resource programming and foreign supports, while playing a vital role in the budget planning.

During the meeting, the regional committees - the administration, the civil society, development partners, and the private sector- will diagnose the situation of the Nigerien poverty reduction paper, in a bid to converge to the achievement of the MDGs, sources said.
