Nigeria selects 11 weightlifters for forthcoming Commonwealth Games

APA - Lagos (Nigeria) The Secretary of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), Uche Onwumeh, says the 11 weightlifters to represent Nigeria at the October Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, have been selected by the Federation.

Onwumeh told journalists on Wednesday in Lagos that they were selected for the final phase of camping before the competition.

She, however, said the number could be pruned by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“We are at the final stage of preparations for the Games. We in the Federation have done what is expected of us by training and selecting the best athletes that can represent the country.

“But it is now left for the NSC to select the number of weightlifters it can accommodate for the Games,” Onwumeh said.

The selected weightlifters were among the 25 the federation called to camp in May after a three-day trial in Lagos.

Onwumeh said she was confident of a good performance by the athletes in India.

According to her, the weightlifters are in high spirit for the competition, judging from their response to training.

“I am convinced that they will come back with a basket load of medals,” she said, adding that the athletes and the others for the Games should undertake a training tour before the competition proper.
