Malawi female basketball team maintains top African position

APA-Lilongwe (Malawi) The Malawi national female basketball team, the Queens have maintained their first position in Africa and fifth in the world during the on-going Commonwealth Games in India, APA learns here.


According to local press reports, Malawi emerged winners after beating South Africa by 57 baskets to 42 outclassing their rivals in a game played on Monday in New Delhi.


Queens Coach Edith Kaliati said the players punched above their weight to defend their position against South Africa,


"We wanted to defend our position and we have done it in style against South Africa. Here we are the Malawi Queens with no African side ahead of us,” she said.


After failing to qualify for the top four, New Zealand, Australia, Jamaica and England are the only teams ahead of Malawi.
